About the more hotel Mazetti

Here, you can read about how The More Hotel ended up in a chocolate factory in Malmö. But we’ll begin with a story of love and strength.

It’s said that once upon a time, a heating boiler needed to be replaced at the Mazetti factory in Malmö. Over the years, the factory had expanded, and the boiler had ended up in a tricky spot. It was surrounded by buildings, making it impossible to bring in a crane or truck to remove the huge, extremely heavy piece of equipment. If you've visited the hotel and looked out over the old, lovely courtyard from your hotel window, you’ll understand why.

It so happened that, at that very moment, a circus was in town in Malmö. The circus had two elephants, a male and a female. The elephants were led through the city to the narrow gate of the chocolate factory and into the courtyard, curiously followed by children and adults who at the time had rarely seen such animals, let alone so closely. Once there, the male elephant was harnessed and positioned in front of the boiler. There was no more room for both elephants. The male elephant tightened the harnesses, but cheers from the onlookers didn’t seem enough to motivate him. So, the female elephant was brought forward to stand beside him. With the power of love, the male elephant finally pulled the boiler out as needed.

From the very beginning, when the neighborhood was built where the chocolate factory once stood in Malmö and where The More Hotel is now located, business was thriving for the founder Emil Nissen from Flensburg. In 1888, he founded the Malmö Chocolate and Confectionery Factory AB, which would later be renamed Mazetti. The cans of cocoa became popular, and over time, much to Nissen's irritation, they began to be reused. Eventually, it was decided that the contents of the cocoa cans should be sealed so that customers could easily see that the can hadn’t been reused with questionable contents. This is when the eyes appeared, as both an advertisement and a warning to ensure the quality of the cocoa really came from Mazetti: "See with your own eyes that you are getting Mazetti’s cocoa." Thus, Ögoncacao was born, becoming synonymous with quality.

About 70 years later, the legendary advertising illustrator Olle Eksell was hired to refresh the brand's image. It was at the end of the 1950s that the eyes, still associated with Ögoncacao today, were created. These eyes and the new design were a key factor in the resurgence of sales, and they remain a part of Swedish cultural heritage to this day.

In 1975, Fazer acquired Mazetti, but the factory remained open until 1992 when production was finally shut down. The machines stopped, and the staff left.

In 2002, Peter Dahlqvist took over the abandoned premises, and a new chapter began for the old factory. Today, The More Hotel occupies large parts of the old building complex.

The hotel’s rooms have been carefully renovated to preserve the character of the building, with beautiful windows and exposed beams. Over the years, many guests have repeatedly chosen to stay in the former chocolate factory.
